Swarthmore College on Saturday announced the largest gift in its history.
The $50 million donation came from Eugene Lang, who graduated from the Delaware County, Pa., college in 1938. Lang’s previous donations to Swarthmore included money to support the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility, the Lang Music Building, the Eugene and Theresa Lang Performing Arts Center, as well as faculty research, student aid and endowed professorships.
The gift will fund new engineering and science facilities and help Swarthmore connect its engineering program with its liberal arts programs. Making those connections is a major part of the strategic plan the college adopted last December. Swarthmore has had an engineering program since its third academic year, 1871-’72, and says it is one of only nine premier liberal arts colleges to have one.
