Modules
Module 1
Foundations of Inclusive Data Collection
This module introduces the foundations of inclusive data collection, emphasizing the importance of gathering racially diverse data to ensure equitable outcomes in fundraising and philanthropy. Learners will explore key ethical considerations, such as protecting participants’ privacy and ensuring informed consent, while also addressing challenges such as language limitations, mistrust, and sampling biases, which often hinder participation from socially, culturally, and economically diverse communities. Best practices regarding thoughtful data practices such as the design and implementation of multilingual tools, culturally appropriate survey formats, and working with trusted community partners that can enhance participation and build trust will be explored. This foundational module prepares learners to overcome challenges and implement data collection practices that align with ethical, inclusive, and effective goals for social impact.
Module 2
Capturing Racially Diverse Data: Designing Accessible and Inclusive Surveys
Learners will explore how to design and implement accessible and inclusive surveys that effectively capture racially diverse data. Best practices on creating survey questions that are unbiased, culturally relevant, and reflective of lived experiences to ensure that data accurately represents diverse communities will be presented. This module will also address the importance of avoiding bias in question framing and response options, which can distort results or exclude meaningful input from socially, culturally, and economically diverse populations. Learners will also evaluate the importance of pilot testing tools with target populations to identify and address potential language or accessibility issues before full deployment. By the end of this module, learners will be equipped with the skills needed to design inclusive surveys that generate data capable of driving equity-focused fundraising strategies and creating anti-racist policies.
Module 3
Analyzing Data with an Intersectional, Race-Based Lens
This module focuses on analyzing data through an intersectional, race-based lens, equipping participants with the skills to identify and interpret patterns of inequity. Learners will explore how multi-dimensional data and intersectional analysis of data considers multiple factors—such as race, gender, and income—offering deeper insights into the root causes of disparities. By utilizing race-conscious analytical frameworks, learners will understand how to break down data by race and other factors, helping them uncover important patterns that might be overlooked when data is grouped too broadly. Learners will review best practices to disaggregate data, revealing trends that might otherwise remain hidden within broader aggregates. This approach allows institutions to pinpoint where inequities exist and design targeted interventions accordingly.
