In this year’s annual report, we examine gifts of $10M+ given in 2023. Top-line findings include:

  • $10M+ giving was down by 40% in 2023, however, the decrease was skewed by the $5B gift Bill Gates made to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2022. In the absence of each year’s largest gift, giving was down by 21% in 2023 when compared to 2022. Excluding each year’s largest gift dating back to 2013, giving in 2023 exceeded $10B for just the fourth time during that period.
  • Despite the lack of billion-dollar gifts in 2023, the number of donations surpassing $100M during the year exceeded any other year dating back to 2013, except for 2021 and 2022.
  • The tally of gifts exceeding $50M in 2023 also outstripped any other year since 2013, again except for 2021 and 2022.
  • After excluding giving to personal or family foundations, proportional giving dollars by sector in 2023 was nearly identical to 2022. In both years, 54% of giving went to Higher Education, 21%–22% of giving went to Health, 4% went to Arts, Culture, and the Environment, 1%–3% went to Schools, and 18%–19% went to Other Causes.
