Institutions seeing real value are not chasing hype or automating donor relationships. Instead, they are using AI deliberately to reclaim staff capacity, improve decision making, and protect donor trust, with guardrails in place from the start.
Why this Matters Now
AI adoption in fundraising is growing quickly, but its strategic impact remains uneven. In most organizations, use is still ad hoc and siloed, driven by individual curiosity rather than coordinated leadership and shared direction.

- Effective without clean data, governance, and clear ownership
- Something that works “out of the box” without thoughtful design
The decisions that matter, such as what to pursue, who to trust, and how to steward donor relationships, remain human responsibilities.
Where Institutions are Seeing Real Value
The most compelling early wins are low-risk, high-return uses that work behind the scenes.
- Analytical acceleration: Teams are moving faster on prospect research, pipeline review, and engagement analysis, surfacing patterns and potential risks earlier than traditional reporting allows.
- Capacity relief: AI is helping staff draft internal summaries, briefing notes, and first-pass content, and reduce time spent on manual reporting and preparation.
- Decision support: Rather than replacing judgment, AI is helping teams ask better questions of their data and stress-test assumptions before acting.
What these uses share: they support people rather than replace them, and they do not cut into the donor relationship.
Donor Trust and Risk: The Non-negotiables
If there is a single gatekeeper for AI in fundraising, it is trust.
Across sectors, donors are generally more comfortable with AI used behind the scenes than in direct interactions. Concerns rise quickly when technology feels opaque, impersonal, or like it has replaced a human who should have been there.

Establishing data quality standards, governance, risk tolerance, and clarity on where AI should not be used. - Targeted pilots
Starting with low-risk, high- value use cases that support staff and leaders rather than automate relationships. - Adoption and change
Helping teams actually use what has been built. This is where most value is realized, or lost.
Technology is rarely the hard part. Getting people to change how they work is.

Most advancement leaders ask some version of this. The answer, usually, is no—or at least not in the way they think.
Most institutions are already using AI in some form, just without coordination or shared direction. The real risk is not moving too slowly. It is moving quickly without alignment, governance, or trust, and finding out later what that cost the institution.
The goal is not speed for its own sake. It is to keep pace with technology in ways that deliver genuine value while protecting what you have built with donors over years.

AI is one of several forces reshaping fundraising. The institutions that benefit most will be those that stay grounded in mission, invest in governance, and use AI to strengthen, not shortcut, the human work of philanthropy.
Progress does not require getting everything right from the start. It requires clarity, discipline, and leadership staying engaged as the work evolves.
